Sofia Digital has been selected by the DVB Project to develop and validate a reference application for DVB-I. The Finland-based company was chosen on the basis of its response to the Request for Proposals issued by DVB in September 2019.
DVB is fostering the development of a reference application to ensure the verification and validation of the DVB-I specification and to help ease the path towards its market implementation. DVB-I enables internet-centric service discovery and programme metadata, with an initial focus on linear television services. The television services themselves can be delivered by broadband, broadcast or a mix of both.
Sofia Digital is now developing a DVB-I client, using HTML5 and JavaScript code, that can run both on Android and HbbTV devices.
Demonstration at DVB World 2020
The first phase of the work will result in a public demonstration of the reference application at DVB World 2020 (Valencia, 9–11 March). Insights gained during the development of the application will be shared as part of the pre-conference masterclass on “Deploying DVB-I Services”.
The DVB-I client developed by Sofia Digital will ultimately be made freely available under an open source license. The company will also create documentation showing how broadcasters and network or platform operators may re-use all or part of the code as part of their own applications and how they may extend it.
